This talk outlines some of the key discussions on the role and purpose of feminism in Japan today. Through introducing public figures grappling with how to define feminism and its purpose in postwar Japanese society within both domestic legal structures and also transnational movements, this presentation considers both the possibilities and challenges to a larger feminist project in Japan that would interrogate the ontology of ‚woman‘ or dismantle other forms of discrimination.

Prof. Schieder is a historian of contemporary Japan and the author of Coed Revolution:The Female Student in the Japanese New Left (Duke University Press, 2021). Prof. Schieder publishes widely on protest, women, violence, and Japan for academic and general
audiences.
